Welcome to Motor-vation School of Motoring
This instructor has moved on to pastures new.
This web space is now available to lease at £15 per month via the link at the bottom of the screen.
MOTOR-VATION like many driving schools is a one man, one car set up. However, unlike some driving schools I am totally independent and not franchised to any other company. (Such as the AA or BSM for example). That means I can set my own fees, which, if you were to compare them, you would find are, in many cases, lower than these or similarly franchised companies. This does not mean for one minute however that the quality of instruction you will receive from me will be of a lower standard.
Please note there is no connection between myself and Motorvation at Llanfair PG.
I am a fully qualified driving instructor (ADI), as opposed to a potential driving instructor (PDI), (see below), registered with and approved by the Driving Standards Agency. I qualified as a driving instructor in April 2004. I am a member of the Motoring Schools Association of Great Britain (MSA) and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Despite having been qualified for just over three years I do however have a vast wealth of driving experience to share with you. (See: The Instructor.)
I can offer lessons to suit any level of driver:
- Absolute Beginners who have never sat behind the wheel
- Those with limited experience
- Those with considerable experience but have yet to take the test
- Those who feel they need a change of instructor
- Those who have passed their test but in need of refresher training
- Advanced training (Also consider IAM)
When booking your lessons do not be afraid to ask whether or not your instructor is fully qualified, or just a potential driving instructor (PDI) who is still in training. If they are fully qualified then he/she should have a green badge in the windscreen of their car when they pick you up. If it is pink then they are not. If you do end up with a PDI it is possible that person may never go on to become fully qualified and may even have to give up teaching you part way through your training. Even at this stage many PDI's fail to make the grade. Make sure you are getting proper value for your money.

Learning to Drive
It should be noted that driving is a serious matter and I do take driving very seriously. That does not mean however we cannot have the odd laugh or two along the way, because to me it is also important that you should enjoy your driving. Driving is recognised as one of life's skills and you should remember, it is a privilege, not a right.
You must be willing to work hard but teaching will be set at a pace that fits in with your personal ability.
To be able to drive on your own you will need to pass both the theory/hazard perception test and a practical driving test. I would recommend that you to obtain your own study materials, including the Highway Code for the theory test as these are regularly being updated and it has become more and more impractical to keep a supply for lending out. Please contact me should you want any advice on what you may need. Please also feel free to ask for advice on anything that you come across during the course of your studying, about which you are uncertain.
Did you know that you can apply for your driving licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday and therefore actually take the theory test on your birthday? Why not start studying now and get it out of the way? The things you learn for the theory test will be of benefit to you when it comes to your practical driving.
There is no definitive time or number of lessons you will need to reach test standard, everybody is different. According to DSA figures the average person with no previous experience can expect to need about 40-45 hours professional tuition. This is in addition to any private practice you may get. Some people may not be fortunate enough to get private practice so it could take longer.
If you are talented you will not be held back, but a minimum standard must be achieved before you can consider applying for the practical test.
You should be aware that if you do apply for your test before your instructor thinks you are ready, he/she has the right to withhold the use of their vehicle for the test and you will lose your test fee.

Cost of Driving Lessons
What a hot potato this is. The range of prices vary so much. Town to town, city to city, even instructor to instructor. Money is important to all of us, me included. Every one of us wants a bargain and the most they can for their money but learning to drive is not something you want to try and do on the cheap. What are you really getting for those lower prices or offers?
There are some instructors out there who charge ridiculously low prices, but have to work far more hours than is sometimes safe to achieve the potential earnings of a driving instructor, as shown in the national press. The more hours your instructor is working the more tired they will become which in turn means the standard and quality of the lesson you receive may suffer. If the lessons you receive are of poor quality you may well end up needing more lessons than you would have done normally and you save nothing.
To appeal to you and keep their prices artificially low some instructors also engage in what is known as "piggy-backing." Is yours one of them? You could be losing up to half your lesson driving to pick up the next pupil or dropping off the previous pupil. Try halving what you currently pay and add it to what you are paying, this should give you a more realistic figure for the price of a lesson. This method of working is strongly frowned upon by the more professional amongst us. Again this could result in you needing more lessons than normal and you save nothing.
Ask yourself are you really getting value for your money?
Lets keep things nice and simple: I charge £22 per hour.
You will receive one full hour on a one to one basis. That’s it. My promise to you however is that you will not be affected by inflation. What you pay for your last lesson will be the same as you pay for your first, no matter how long it takes you.
(1 hour, 90 minutes or 2 hourly lessons available charged on a pro rata basis.)
Hours of work:
| Tuesday to Thursday | 8:00am – 9:00pm |
| Friday | 8:00am – 6:00pm |
These will be subject to review once I have moved to the area.

Intensive Driving Courses
These do not suit everybody as they are what they say, intensive. They are very demanding and if you are putting in the work, energy draining.
To undergo intensive training you will need to have passed your theory test and have a practical test booked (usual waiting times are 6 - 8 weeks). If you have no previous driving experience you will be looking at approximately 32 hours including the test (paid for by you). So as not to over-face you this would be best spread over two weeks.
If you are experienced you would probably be looking at about 20 hours including your test (paid for by you). This could be fitted into a single week.
Remember though even an intensive course cannot guarantee you a pass. Some instructors may guarantee you will pass with them, but that is only if you stay with them long enough after that first failure. Be realistic it could happen. Whilst every instructor strives for a first time pass for all his students it will never happen.
If you are interested in doing an intensive course ring me to discuss your requirements:
The full cost of the course will be payable at the time of booking and will not be refunded in the case of a cancellation of less than two weeks notice.

Pass Plus Courses
Strongly recommended to all of you who are serious about driving, the bonus being, you can usually recoup more than the cost of the course on the savings on your insurance. My price: still £22 per hour.
This consists of 6 modules which cover the following:
- Town Driving
- Rural Driving
- Dual Carriageways
- Motorways
- Night Time Driving
- Driving in Inclement Weather
Yes, you may have already come across some of these during your learning, with the exception of motorways, but as a learner were you really taking in everything you were being told or were you concentrating more on the basics? I think I can guess which.
This course goes over each of the above subjects in more detail and you should spend at least one hour on each topic. If the weather at the time or the time of year prevents you covering the topic practically it can be done theoretically. What better time than to do one now with the dark nights approaching. Who knows, with a bit of luck it might start to rain and blow up a bit of a gale.
Many councils are now supporting the Pass Plus which is highly applauded. However, check out what is on offer. Some will pay for the full amount of the course allowing you to choose your own instructor, others will pay part of the cost and some have their own schemes.
In the case of the latter, do your homework. A genuine Pass Plus course according to the guide, covering all of the above topics, should consist of not less than 6 hours of which 5 1/2 should be practical driving. There are some schemes where you spend a considerable amount of time in a classroom and then to achieve the required time on the road you are piggy-backed (oops, it's that word again) yet again. (Approximately 3 hours driving each instead of the required 5½.)
You will be better off paying the full amount yourself and getting full one to one training where it matters, on the road. With me you will drive around a major town or city unfamiliar to you and on 4 lane motorways (compare this with the A55), as well as covering all the other required modules.
I had one young man who saved twice as much on his insurance as it cost him to pay me the full amount.
